This is all just an artifact of the Iran war.

Exactly one major oil exporter fell this year: Saudi Arabia, off 2.2 million barrels a day. That drop is the entire reason the US is now number one.

The numbers. In 2025 Saudi shipped 8.1 million barrels a day, the US 6.6. By May 2026 the US is at 10.5 and Saudi has fallen to 5.9. America didn't pull away. The leader got knocked down.

The reason is one event. Since February the US-Iran war has throttled Saudi shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint that moves a fifth of the world's oil. The one country positioned to out-export America got partly sealed behind a war.

Strip that out and the title doesn't move. Saudi at a normal 8.1 still sits ahead of America's real number, the volume left once you back out the 172 million barrels Trump pulled from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in March to pad the total.

So "the US is the world's largest oil exporter" is really a sentence about Hormuz. The ranking flipped because a war capped the leader, not because America pulled away. The day the Strait reopens, the crown goes back.
