I'm too European to understand how the unions work. Surely they'd have some influence, but I don't understand why they'd be able to block any development
That being said, what I think could work is to do an international exchange. Show a US big city fire crew how they work in Europe. Show them the specialist roles that people have, the dedicated equipment and the systems that are in place to make sure you always have what you need on scene
I think a large part of it is fear of missing something and having to wait for it to get there. And I agree, that would be devestating for a firefighter, but it's also not a realistic fear. The rest is most likely fear of the unknown or rejection to change
Bring them here. Show them a car crash response, a water recovery, a breach and entry. Let them see it's faster, more efficient and above all not a reduction but an expansion of capabilities
