Brief

Michael Lewis, a 23-year-old from Rhyl, was killed on holiday in Tenerife in 2019 after walking into a street fight in Arona and dying in hospital two days later; papers labeled it a 'random attack'. The author argues that, beyond tourist areas, Tenerife has long-standing safety issues blamed on asylum seekers and migrant groups, with frequent robberies targeting women and older people.

Source evidence

Michael Lewis was 23 when he got killed on holiday in Tenerife back in 2019. Lad from Rhyl, out there with his mates in Arona. He left the hotel to grab some food and walked into a street fight between two foreign guys. Got beaten so badly he died in hospital two days later. The papers called it a random attack.

Outside the main tourist spots Tenerife has had these problems for years. Asylum seekers and migrant groups have turned parts of the island rough for locals and visitors. Robberies happen regularly, a lot of them targeting women and older people.
