Author claims OpenAI's Jalapeño is probably the first AI chip designed and built…

Brief

Jalapeño, OpenAI's new chip announced 2026-06-24 and co-developed with Broadcom, is claimed by the author to be the first chip primarily designed and built by AI (reportedly using Codex/internal models). The post argues this custom hardware could become the bedrock of AGI, giving OpenAI a full-stack advantage through increased inference and optimization.

Why it matters

Author claims OpenAI's Jalapeño is probably the first AI chip designed and built primarily by AI models, reportedly using Codex/internal models to drive design and development.

Key details

  • OpenAI announced Jalapeño on 2026-06-24, saying it was designed with Broadcom and is purpose-built for LLM workloads powering ChatGPT, Codex, the API, and future agentic products.
  • Author argues custom AI hardware is the bedrock of future AGI: if Jalapeño runs well on OpenAI's models it enables more inference, better optimization, and a significant full-stack acceleration of model development.
Source evidence

this is probably the 1st ai chip designed and built primarily by ai models.

apparently codex / internal models used which means openAI just opened up a new race that’s arguably as important as anthropic’s pursuit of frontier coding AI:

custom AI hardware. the bedrock of what any future AGI will run on

no use having frontier intelligence if it runs on sub-optimal infra. all openai needs is for the chips to work well on THEIR models and they can accelerate model development significantly

more inference, better optimization.

genius if they pull it off

We’ve designed and built our first AI chip: Jalapeño.

Designed from the ground up by OpenAI and brought to production with @Broadcom, Jalapeño is purpose-built for the LLM workloads powering ChatGPT, Codex, the API, and future agentic products.

Chips are foundational to the AI economy. Building our own expands our full-stack platform from products to models to infrastructure, and will help us scale intelligence, serve more people, and expand access to AI.
