An animal that smells water from 12 miles out is not getting surprised by a fruit table six feet away.
The African elephant carries close to 2,000 olfactory receptor genes, the most ever counted in any animal. You have 396. A bloodhound has around 800. So the nose at the tip of that trunk runs roughly five times the scent hardware a human does and twice a dog's.
Watch the trunk in the clip. It never stops sweeping the air, resampling the scene the way your hand feels around a dark room. By the time she "walks in," she has already read everything on that table down to which slice is freshest.
The backwards entrance was staged for the people filming it. She knew exactly what was waiting. She just let everyone have the moment.
