Anthropic's Fable lasted three days, Mythos never went public at all, and now OpenAI's frontier model is invite-only, too.
OpenAI previewed GPT-5.6 in three tiers, with Sol as the frontier model and Terra and Luna as the cheaper options. At the request of the U.S. government, none of the three is going straight to the public.
They're starting as a limited preview for a small group of approved partners, with wider access promised in the coming weeks. Sol is the flagship, their most capable model yet, and their strongest for cybersecurity.
The pattern is hard to miss. The government pulled Anthropic's Fable 5 within days, and Mythos never opened to the public at all. Now, the most powerful model OpenAI has shipped is launching behind the same kind of wall.
The popular read on X is that Anthropic started this. The argument goes that months of casting Mythos as too dangerous to release invited the scrutiny and handed Washington a reason to put a permission layer over the whole field. Dario's name comes up a lot in those threads.
There's a fair counterpoint, though. The government chose to act, and Anthropic can't gate anyone's models, so plenty of people are putting this on the administration instead of one lab.
Either way, the direction is the part worth sitting with. The most capable models are starting to arrive late, locked, and approved one customer at a time. Access is turning into something you apply for.
That leaves two real questions. Is government-gated frontier AI just normal now? And when Sol finally opens up, will it actually be better than Fable was in its three days?
