Alice Yake, vice president of GRIDS at Breakthrough Energy and former chief planning officer at Xcel Energy, framed the current power-sector challenge around three linked questions: can we produce enough kilowatt‑hours, can we deliver them, and can we do so affordably. The conversation began with Yake’s overview of why grid planning exists (natural‑monopoly wires and long asset lives) and how planning used to focus on a single annual peak hour but has become dramatically more complex as wind, solar and storage require probabilistic, multi‑hour planning. She warned that the U.S. grid is aging (average system age ~55 years, average asset life ~60 years), so much of the near‑term price pressure comes from necessary capital replacement and depreciation math rather than just new loads. Yake also described the regulatory pain points: models look like black boxes, stakeholders cannot replicate results, and proceedings can become protracted—she personally has faced more than 250 hours of cross‑examination in rate cases.
The middle of the interview moved into tradeoffs and concrete technical details. Yake said about 55% of the planet could be economically served 24/7 by wind+solar+battery, but regions north or south of roughly the 40th parallel (and other local factors) will need dispatchable resources (gas, nuclear, geothermal, hydro) or massive long‑distance transmission. She emphasized planner-level issues—N‑1 contingencies, black‑start, inertia and VAR support—and noted no solver yet optimally chooses across all 8,760 hours for every asset. On new loads, hyperscalers change load factor and can shorten generator life and require upgrades; they are a significant regional stress but not the fundamental cause of rising rates. Yake endorsed using AI and modern compute to help operators handle exploding data and permutations, urged more transparent open‑source models to inform long (30–50 year) decisions, and stressed that alignment (who pays, who benefits, who “bears the pylons”) and local community engagement are essential to build transmission and resilient cross‑border systems. Jason Bordoff largely agreed and pushed on geopolitics, PJM capacity tensions, and the policy role, while Yake repeatedly returned to the central theme: physics, long horizons, transparent planning, and better tools are needed to deliver a reliable, cleaner grid.
