Fable vs GPT-5.6 Wasn’t Even Close

Brief

Matt Maher’s 2026-07-20 video presentation compares Fable 5 and GPT‑5.6 Sol turning the same Claude Design handoff, concise build brief, and /goal into multiplayer games. Both produced first builds in ~90 minutes; Fable finished faster and with far fewer messages (6–7) on a Spades build, while Sol built a tougher Dash variant but needed ~14 hours and 65+ interactions, repeatedly pulling the author back into the loop.

Why it matters

Both models produced impressive first builds in about 90 minutes; Fable 5 reached a polished multiplayer Spades build in ~3.5 hours across 6–7 messages, while GPT‑5.6 “Sol” took ~14 hours and 65+ messages.

Key details

  • Sol implemented a harder Parcheesi‑style game (Dash) with a strong engine and local problem‑solving but required the author to identify each subsequent UX/product issue; Fable generalized from intent and filled more gaps autonomously.
Source evidence

I gave Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol nearly the same high-level assignment: take a Claude Design handoff, a concise build brief, and /goal, then turn it into a polished multiplayer game. Both returned impressive first builds in about 90 minutes. The difference appeared after they said they were done: Fable reached the finish line in about three and a half hours and six or seven messages; Sol took about 14 hours and 65-plus messages.

This isn't a same-game benchmark or a claim that Sol is bad. Fable built Spades; Sol built the harder Parcheesi-style Dash, with a strong engine and excellent local problem-solving. But Sol needed me to identify each next UX and product problem one by one, while Fable generalized from intent and filled more gaps on its own. For user-facing software, one kept me at the objective level; the other pulled me back into the loop.
