Over the last few weeks both OpenAI and Anthropic got caught up in this. Anthropic’s Mythos (and its protected version, Fable 5) was pulled back under export control; this week OpenAI was asked to slow the rollout of GPT-5.6 and vet who gets it. I wanted to breathe some reality into the story — separate the actual record from the panic, give you my honest read, and then get to the part I think we’re getting wrong: this isn’t really about safety, and “just lock it down” isn’t a plan.
