Anthropic's Fable 5 was not just another model bump. It was a real jump in long-running tasks, coding benchmarks, and the kind of intent-carrying behavior I care about most. Then the US government stepped in and access was abruptly cut off. So this is part hands-on review, part benchmark breakdown, and part "what exactly did we just watch happen?"
Fable 5 was released as a safer offshoot of Mythos 5, with a classifier in front of the more dangerous capability surface. I tested it before access disappeared, and the results were not subtle: stronger benchmark numbers, better long-task behavior, and a much better "pre-plan" style that made complex requests easier to steer. But the bigger story is the June 12 US government directive that forced Anthropic to disable access, including for foreign nationals and even some employees. If this standard becomes normal, it could change how every frontier model gets deployed.
