Every AI chat lives in a box. It can talk, but it can't touch your stuff — your real files, the apps you already use, your whole computer. The Codex Desktop app is the one that gets out, and you're probably already paying for it. Here it is working on real things, start to finish — about ten of which a chat window simply can't do.
This is a getting-started, start-to-finish look at the Codex Desktop app, told as one story: three walls come down. Wall one is your files — it works inside a real folder on your drive, reading, writing, and organizing actual documents instead of talking about copies from behind glass. Wall two is your world — your email, your calendar, your real signed-in browser, and when the browser isn't enough, your whole computer. Wall three is where it stops organizing and starts building — images, a full ad campaign, and a real working app put together from your own notes and a spreadsheet, several at once, even while you walk away on your phone. If you've gotten good mileage out of a chat window, this is just the next step out, and there's no trap-in — everything it makes is a real file you keep. Open it, point it at a folder, and ask it to do one thing you could never do in a chat.
You need a paid plan to use it. The entry tier is plenty to get started, and installing it is the easy part — if you get stuck, just ask ChatGPT to walk you through it.
