Demand response is a tool that can help balance the grid by increasing or decreasing electricity demand based on availability. While currently used primarily by industrial and commercial customers, residential demand response programs could be implemented using smart appliances. This would allow utilities to shift electricity demand to times when it is cheaper and cleaner to meet, reducing the need for inefficient gas peaker plants.
