One Month Flying The Boeing 757 & 767 | 43,500 Miles, 12 Flights, 4 Countries

Brief

Swayne Martin (video tutorial/vlog) walks viewers through his first month as a United lineholder in May 2023, demonstrating the bid/trip‑trading workflow and seniority effects while flying 43,500 miles on 12 flights. He highlights busy layovers (UK, Ireland, Iceland), an EWR–Lima pickup, and the schedule tradeoffs of reduced days off.

Why it matters

In May 2023 Swayne Martin operated as a first-time United lineholder, flying 43,500 miles on 12 flights across 4 countries and intentionally reduced his monthly days off to 12 while completing six international three‑day trips.

Key details

  • The video explains operational details: how to transition from reserve to lineholder, how base/equipment/seat seniority affects bid awards, and how trip trading reshapes schedules (includes an example pickup of an EWR–Lima, Peru trip).
  • Context: Martin resumed filming after a year off following ALPA contract changes, moved to San Francisco to fly the 757 domestically and to Hawaii, and published the video on 2024-05-04 with United's filming approval.

Your Path to United Airlines: https://bit.ly/UALPilotApplication ... In May 2023, I was a "lineholder" for the first time as a United Airlines pilot flying the 757 & 767. In this video, I'll teach you what it means to transition from being a reserve pilot to holding a line, how trip trading impacts your schedule, and what it's like to fly 43,500 miles in one month. On an average month, I have 16-18 days off. So, to be clear, this month was a major exception as I brought myself down to 12 days off and flew 6 international 3-day trips.

To all of the future pilots watching... I'm so glad to be back with you after a year-long break from filming. My decision to pause YouTube coincided with a few major events: ALPA (our pilot union) passed an important new pilot contract, and I moved to San Francisco, where I'm flying domestically on 757 across the country and to Hawaii. I hope you enjoy this video, filmed in May 2023, and can't wait to hear how else I can support your journey to the flight deck!
