engineerguy’s short explains the Bayer filter used on CMOS and CCD camera sensors (video, 2023-10-10). In a 2×2 mosaic—two greens, one red, one blue—the extra green samples luminance more accurately. Camera firmware then uses demosaicing to interpolate the absent color values and produce a full-color image, a standard approach in phone and digital cameras.
The Bayer filter is a color filter array placed over CMOS or CCD sensors with a 2×2 repeating pattern: 2 green, 1 red, 1 blue, giving green twice the sampling density for luminance accuracy.
