I can’t believe NYC is proposing a ~$310 million/year incentive for grocery stores to eliminate their entire front-end.
This gives grocers cover to cut checkers, supervisors, and the cash office AND accelerate automated checkouts.
Here’s how it works:
• 10% self-checkout discount passes
• Stores raise shelf prices 10% → net prices fall ~1%
• The whole front-end department gets cut (not just the people scanning)
• Across ~1,100 NYC supermarkets that produces ~$310M a year in labor, turnover, cash handling, and space savings.
Really smart plan. Businesses win, consumers get lower prices, and the city just has to eat the lost tax revenue and jobs.
Genius.
