Brief

Yongfook’s observation: changes in training between model releases for ChatGPT and Claude can alter which businesses the models mention, which may move referral traffic. Although search-enabled LLMs are more stable, outputs drawn from trained data can shift. @levelsio (2026-08-03) warns this fuels new tactics to game AI training and AI SEO.

Why it matters

Yongfook (@yongfook) posits that when ChatGPT or Anthropic's Claude switch to a new model release, differences in how the model was trained can change whether and how often the model mentions specific businesses, potentially altering referral traffic.

Key details

  • LLM apps that rely on live web-search tooling are less affected by model-retraining changes, but models still produce answers from their trained data and those outputs can shift between releases.
  • @levelsio (posted 2026-08-03) highlights that many businesses are actively trying to secure mentions across the web to influence inclusion in training data—an emerging concern for AI SEO.
Source evidence

Yongfook posits that whenever ChatGPT or Claude switch to a new model release, the model is trained differently and that could affect mentions and then traffic to your business

It's a great point and I never thought of this

Obviously LLM apps use web search tooling which isn't affected by model changes as much, but they also just say things from their trained data

We know many businesses do many things now to try get into the training data trying to get mentions everywhere

Interesting time for AI SEO

Jon Yongfook (@yongfook)

Always be nice to your LLM.
