Brief

Ben Scharfstein argues that current power-law dynamics let employees capture better-than-founder-level upside if they join the right company. He recommends judging opportunities by the Pareto frontier of traction (risk) versus team size (upside) and finding teams with asymmetric team-size-to-traction ratios. He notes Applied Compute has 35 people and is hiring a 36th.

Why it matters

Ben Scharfstein (post dated 2026-07-30) asserts that at the right company you can achieve better-than-founder-level upside because power-law returns are 'too strong and getting stronger.'

Key details

  • He reframes career choice as evaluating the Pareto frontier of traction (risk) versus team size (upside), advising people to find teams with an asymmetric team-size-to-traction ratio for outsized upside.
  • Applied Compute is 'only 35 strong' per Scharfstein and is actively hiring ('Looking for 36'), cited in reply to Andrew Yeung's claim that the next 3–5 years offer founder-level upside without founder-level risk.
Source evidence

Couldn't agree more. In fact, I think at the right company you can get even better than founder level upside. Power laws are just too strong and getting stronger.

We often think about the Pareto frontier of model cost/quality. When joining a company, the right framework is the Pareto frontier of about traction (risk) to team size (upside).

There are many teams with lots of traction. The career choice with asymetric upside is finding a team where the ratio of team size to traction is asymmetric as well.

People are often surprised when I tell them we're only 35 strong at Applied Compute. Looking for 36!

I don't think most people realize how rare this moment in history is.

You can get founder-level upside (equity) without taking founder-level risk.

Pick the right company to work at in the next three to five years, and it could make your entire career.
