Brief

A developer created an open-source browser extension that monetizes the seconds users wait for AI replies (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) by showing one dismissible sponsored text line and splitting 50% of ad revenue with users as Stripe bank payouts. Impressions (no clicks) count, NordVPN currently bids $2.10/1,000 views, ads are country-targeted, and the extension includes limited permissions, tab-checks, bot detection and rate limits to curb abuse.

Why it matters

A developer released a browser extension (post by @om_patel5, published 2026-08-01) that inserts a single dismissible sponsored text line into the empty space while ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini generate responses and pays users 50% of what the advertiser paid, in cash via Stripe (not points or gift cards).

Key details

  • Impressions alone count (no clicks needed); real advertisers already bid — NordVPN is topping bids at $2.10 per 1,000 views — and ads are targeted by country (optional age/gender).
  • Privacy and anti-abuse: the extension renders the ad into empty layout space and requests permissions for only four sites, is open source so code can be audited, and enforces tab-active checks, backend bot-pattern detection and rate limits to prevent scripted farming.
Source evidence

SOMEONE VIBE CODED A BROWSER EXTENSION THAT PAYS YOU CASH FOR THE SECONDS YOU SPEND WAITING ON AI TO RESPOND

every time you hit send on chatgpt, claude or gemini theres a few seconds of dead time while the model generates the response

he turned that gap into an ad slot and splits the money with you

> one small sponsored line appears in the empty space below your message while its thinking
> you earn 50% of whatever the advertiser paid for that view, in actual cash, not points or gift cards
> you dont even have to click it, an impression is enough
> its one dismissible text line, no banners or video
> real advertisers are already bidding against each other for the slot, nordvpn is currently top at $2.10 per 1,000 views
> ads are targeted by country only, you can optionally add age and gender if you want better ones
> payouts go straight to your bank through stripe

it also cant read your chats at all. the card renders into empty layout space below your message and never touches the conversation, and it only requests permissions for the four sites it needs

an ai extension asking for permissions is presumed spyware by default, so he built it so snooping is structurally impossible and shipped the whole thing open source so you can verify it yourself

hes also thought about the obvious abuse angle

it checks the tab is actually active, the backend watches for bot patterns, and there are rate limits, so you cant just farm impressions with a script overnight

its not life changing money of course (its cents)

but everyone using these tools wastes the same few seconds every single day and nobody was doing anything with it at all, so this is a smart way to make use of it
