Brief

Geomagnetic shield weakening and a suspected ongoing geomagnetic excursion are presented as an urgent, underreported global risk. Citing Sergey V. Simonenko’s paper and ~5,000+ hours of personal research, the author claims the field has been declining for ~200 years (NASA/ESA: ~5% per century from 1840–2000) but accelerated by an order of magnitude around 2013 to ~5% per decade, with local declines of 30–50% in the South Atlantic Anomaly. The north magnetic pole’s speed reportedly jumped from ~10–15 km/yr to ~50–60 km/yr since 2000, and some studies predict full reversals within a human lifetime with peak rates up to 100× current. The post argues this weakening likely drives higher global temperatures (claimed to exceed CO2’s contribution), increases radiation exposure, disrupts satellites/communications/ISS, and raises the chance that a moderate solar flare could disable global power and networks; the author says it’s rarely covered because it’s uncontrollable and offers no political leverage.

Why it matters

Sergey V. Simonenko’s recent paper—cited by @zachariaspro—claims Earth is currently in a geomagnetic excursion and that the rate of magnetic-field change is accelerating exponentially, posing systemic risks to modern infrastructure.

Key details

  • Magnetic-field decline has been measurable for ~200 years: NASA/ESA figures put weakening at ~5% per century from 1840–2000, which @zachariaspro says increased 10× by 2013 to ~5% per decade; parts of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) are reported down by 30–50%.
  • Magnetic-pole motion has sped up since 2000: the north magnetic pole’s drift rose from ~10–15 km/yr to ~50–60 km/yr (≈300% increase); multiple studies cited claim a reversal could occur within a human lifetime and peak rates could be up to 100× current rates.
  • @zachariaspro (≈5,000+ hours researching) asserts the weakening field is a considerable contributor to present global warming—“probably more than carbon dioxide”—and warns of higher radiation (especially in the SAA/equator), greater temperatures/extreme weather/lightning, satellite/ISS and communications disruptions, and risk that a moderate solar flare could collapse global power/communications; the topic is said to be underreported because it's not controllable and offers no political/power gains.
Source evidence

Came across this two yr old post but it discusses a major potential problem that is rarely addressed. I have been aware of our rapidly changing geomagnetic shield but there isn’t much information for the layperson to follow.

The weakening magnetic shield is a considerable contributor to current global warming. Probably more than carbon dioxide. Yet it ix never covered because there is nothing we can do to control it. Therefore there is nothing power to gain.

I have something like 5,000+ hours into this topic, and I feel like I would be doing humanity a disservice if I didn't share what I have learned

This latest paper by Sergey V. Simonenko confirms two things:

  1. We are currently experiencing a geomagnetic excursion, marked by rapid changes in the Earth's magnetic field over the past two decades.

  2. The rate of geomagnetic changes is not just increasing; it's doing so exponentially, posing significant risks to our modern way of life.

A geomagnetic excursion involves a substantial, though temporary, weakening of Earth's magnetic field, with magnetic poles that may wander significantly or even flip temporarily.

How do we know this? ⬇️

Magnetic Field Strength
Earth's magnetic field has been in measurable decline for ~200 years.

From 1840 to 2000, NASA and the ESA estimated that the magnetic field was weakening by 5% per century.

However, that increased by 10x in 2013, meaning it was weakening by 5% per decade. And there is no reason to think this acceleration has stopped.

In 2023, we shattered low-latitude auroral records despite comparatively weak solar activity. This is a key sign that our magnetic field has continued to get weaker.

See here: piped.video/watch?v=1uV0J3QO…

Modern measurements suggest that in some parts of the world, like the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), the magnetic field strength is down by 30-50%.

Pole Reversal
Data on our magnetic poles indicates that since 2000, both poles have been accelerating in their movement toward one another.

For example, the north magnetic pole has increased in speed from about 10-15 kilometers per year to 50-60 km per year - a 300% increase!

See for yourself with NASA's own interactive models:

ncei.noaa.gov/maps/historica…

Multiple studies have shown that such a reversal can occur well within a human lifetime, and the rate of change at its peak can reach 100x what we are seeing today.

This means we are on the cusp of an exponential acceleration into a temporary reversal:

Why Does This Matter?
The magnetic field protects us from all kinds of cosmic radiation and space weather, including the Sun.

During excursions, because of the weakening field and increased amount of energy to earth, we can expect:

  1. Much higher levels of radiation exposure (especially within the SAA and at the Equator)

  2. Higher global temperatures, more extreme weather, more lightning, etc.

  3. More communication and network disruptions and higher radiation exposure to satellites and the ISS.

At a certain magnetic field strength, even a moderately strong solar flare from our sun could take down global power and communications.

Which is obviously not good for a civilization that runs on electricity to do everything from pumping water to exchanging money.

I know it's a complex topic, so if you read through this and have questions, please drop a comment or send me a DM. Happy to discuss or debate this.
