Thankfully, all of the ugly buildings in this image were destroyed, which is why Strasbourg seems so pleasant to us now.

An 1890s photo looking west over Strasbourg from the cathedral platform, 66 meters up. The tower on the right is the only one the cathedral ever got. When this was taken, Strasbourg was under German rule, and there was fresh talk of finally building the other spire. Nothing came of it, and the front is still one-sided today.
