Gary Marcus claims he authored some of the original work on 'neurosymbolic'…

Brief

Gary Marcus asserts he contributed foundational neurosymbolic work in 2001 and pushed back against a critic attempting to redefine the term. Grigori Karapetyan (@GregKara6) responded that using coding harnesses/tools isn’t the original interpretation, pointing to experiments embedding/executing WASM in LLMs from around 2003 and linking a nitter thread for support.

Why it matters

Gary Marcus claims he authored some of the original work on 'neurosymbolic' approaches in 2001 and objects to being corrected by someone he believes hasn’t read that work (tweeted 2026-08-06).

Key details

  • Grigori Karapetyan (@GregKara6) replied that 'coding harness and tools' are not the original definition of neurosymbolic AI, cites experiments embedding and executing WASM directly in LLMs dating back to 2003, and linked a nitter thread (ChristosTzamos) as evidence.
Source evidence

OMG i wrote some of the original work on what is to be neurosymbolic in 2001 and dude who probably hasn’t read that work is trying to school me on the definition 🤦‍♂️

Grigori Karapetyan (@GregKara6)

coding harness and tools calls are not the original definition of neurosymbolic ai. you can change the definition or interpret it as such, but again was not the original interpretation. this, and many like it that came before it, attempt to do actual neurosymbolic ai by embedding and executing WASM directly in the LLM this is closer to your own definition of neuro-symbolic ai than any gymnastics to interpret harnesses as one. see here, and if you search for simillar experiments you can find them going back to 2003.
