Brief

Benno Krojer defended his PhD on 2026-07-31 with a dissertation, "Deep Integration of Vision and Language," that presents evaluation, modeling, and interpretability work and argues for convergent multimodal ("platonic") representations. Advised by Siva Reddy at MILA/McGill, he will start a postdoc with David Bau at Northeastern; multiple committee members and colleagues attended the celebration.

Why it matters

Benno Krojer successfully defended his PhD on 2026-07-31 with a thesis titled "Deep Integration of Vision and Language," covering evaluation, modeling, and interpretability and claiming some of the strongest evidence for the "platonic representation" hypothesis that multimodal representations converge.

Key details

  • His PhD advisor is Siva Reddy (MILA / McGill NLP); Benno will join David Bau's group at Northeastern for a postdoc focused on interpretability.
  • Examination committee included @mohitban47, @DerekRenderling, @adri_romsor and chair Siamak; supervisory committee members included @jacobandreas and @tyrell_turing; many colleagues attended the celebration and gave thoughtful gifts.

It was quite touching to see so many people showing up to support me and and the very thoughtful gifts

Siva Reddy (@sivareddyg)

Benno Krojer (@benno_krojer) successfully defended his PhD thesis on "Deep Integration of Vision and Language", which spans evaluation, modeling, and interpretability, and offers some of the strongest evidence for platonic representation hypothesis that multi modal representations are converging to similar representations.

Benno is my second PhD student to graduate from my group at @McGill_NLP and third I have supervised to graduation. Next he will join @davidbau's group at NorthEastern for a postdoc position on interpretability.

Congratulation Dr. Krojer! We will miss around but looking forward to all the exciting things you will do!

Many thanks to his examination committee members @mohitban47 @DerekRenderling @adriromsor and the chair Siamak. Also thanks to his supervisory committee members for valuable suggestions at his proposal exam @jacobandreas @tyrellturing.
