I am seeing something happen more and more.
Businesses that are nowhere to be found in Google are showing up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Mode.
No first page rankings. No map pack. A website with 4 backlinks.
But you ask ChatGPT for a roofer in their city and there they are.
Here is why.
Google ranks pages. LLMs assemble answers.
Google has to decide which one of 40 websites deserves the top spot, so it leans on links and authority. That takes years.
An LLM is not doing that. It is grabbing a handful of sources that already list businesses in your city and pulling names out of them.
Yelp. BBB. Angi. A blog post titled "best roofers in Tulsa." A Reddit thread. Your Google Business Profile.
You do not have to beat 40 websites. You have to be present in the sources it reads.
Completely different game. Much faster to win.
What actually gets you cited:
Being in the listicles. If someone in your city wrote "top 5 dentists in Charlotte" and you are not on that list, you lose a spot every single time someone asks.
Yelp and BBB profiles filled out completely. These get cited constantly on local queries.
Reddit. Your city has a subreddit. People ask for recommendations in it every week. Nobody in your industry is paying attention to it.
Reviews with substance. AI Mode reads the text of your reviews and repeats it back. A review that says "great job" does nothing. A review that says "replaced our AC in one day in July" gets quoted.
Real detail on your website. Pricing ranges, actual job examples, your process, licenses, a real human name attached to the content. LLMs are drowning in generic service pages.
Consistent name, address, and phone number everywhere. If three sources say three different things about you, you get skipped.
Brand mentions. It does not need to be a link. Getting talked about on trusted local sites moves the needle on its own.
