Since I've hit 5K followers, it's time for an intro post.

I'm Alvin, born and raised in SF (didn't even know it was a tech capital until high school), studied CS at UC Davis.

I got my start coding back in 2004 (7th grade), learning HTML/CSS on Yahoo GeoCities to build static websites for our classroom, friends, and family.

Eventually coding became my main hobby where I would code upwards of 60 hours a week just for fun (yes, without pay).

My first coding milestone was in high school, rebuilding our official high school website with a CMS and LMS so teachers and students could chat, share class materials, and broadcast updates, all in PHP, MySQL, and jQuery. I was very full-stack, from using Photoshop to design the UI to configuring Apache on Dreamhost.

Since then I've coded at a variety of places: Meta, Airbnb, Brex, Opendoor, and now Factory where I'm head of platform engineering.

I gravitate toward joining early-stage companies during the building phase, where there are hard, open-ended problems to solve. I love refactoring tech debt, fixing perf, changing inefficient processes, and preventing million-dollar mistakes.
