Over the next few cycles, we're going to see more videos like this, as candidates in both parties steeped in the old traditions, the old pluralism, increasingly reach out to voters who may not agree with them about all kinds of issues but no longer feel at home in their party.
The party that does this the best will be the one that ultimately forges a more durable nationwide coalition. The new divide will not be left v. right, as it's traditionally understood, but liberal v. illiberal -- those who respect the old American ideal v. those who do not.
I have no idea which party will prevail. I vacillate, depending on the news cycle.
The partisans in both parties are blind to all this.
