In the freezing Russian winter of 2015, a neighbourhood cat named Masha discovered something unusual inside an apartment building.
A baby boy had been abandoned in a cardboard box near the entrance, with only a few clothes and supplies beside him.
Temperatures outside were below freezing, and the stairwell was dangerously cold.
Masha climbed into the box, curled her body around the baby and stayed beside him, using her own warmth to help protect him from the cold.
But she did not stop there.
The cat began meowing loudly and repeatedly until a nearby resident came to investigate. The woman initially believed Masha might be injured, but instead found her lying next to the infant.
Emergency services were called, and the baby was rushed to hospital. Doctors later said he was healthy, despite reportedly being left in the cold for several hours.
Witnesses said Masha appeared distressed when paramedics carried the child away and even tried to follow the ambulance.
She was not a trained rescue animal or someone’s carefully protected house pet.
She was simply a local cat who found a vulnerable baby, kept him warm and refused to stay quiet until help arrived.
Masha may never have understood exactly what she had done.
But her warmth and persistence may have saved a child’s life.
