For 35 years, a woman in Washington state regularly fed raccoons near her home. Then things suddenly got out of control.
In October 2024, around 100 raccoons began gathering around her Kitsap County property. They came day and night looking for food and became increasingly aggressive. Eventually, the woman had to retreat to her car and call for help.
When sheriff’s deputies arrived, even they were surprised by the huge number of raccoons. They referred her to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for help.
Wildlife officials advised her to stop feeding them. And it worked.
Once the free food disappeared, the huge group of raccoons began to disperse, and the woman was able to reclaim her property.
Officials used the unusual case as a simple warning: feeding wild animals may seem harmless, but it can make them lose their fear of people and create serious problems.
