In 1958 China's government took a share of every village's harvest to feed the cities, and the share was based on what the village reported growing. Villages reported almost double what they actually grew. So the state showed up and took its cut of the imaginary harvest, and that cut was nearly everything the village really had. The food that was supposed to feed farmers all winter left on trucks, because on paper there was plenty left behind.

Why would anyone report double? Because officials who announced record harvests got promoted and officials who reported the truth got purged. Every layer of government padded the number before passing it up. By the time it reached Beijing, the country's leaders genuinely believed they had a food surplus.

They believed it so completely that in 1959, while their own villages were starving, they exported 4 million tons of grain to pay foreign debt. The most they'd ever shipped out. Enough to have fed 16 to 39 million people.

Life expectancy in China fell to about 33 years in 1960. One in five humans alive was Chinese. That is how one country's famine bends the average for the entire species.

The government that caused it was also the only source of information about it. The full count only surfaced when demographers compared later censuses and found tens of millions of people missing. Thirty-six years passed before the first complete account reached the outside world.
