Quickly: I know it's difficult to keep up endurance when it comes to helping families in need, but as so many readers have told me...__nothing__has actually changed in Minnesota. Right now, we're turning our attention to Northfield, Minnesota — a small town an hour south of the cities flooded with ICE. (The Community Action Center is working in overdrive to keep their food shelf stocked and help families in need — but they're also trying to help hundreds of families who haven't worked in the past six weeks. (Here's a great article on the community response — my grandma grew up on a dairy farm outside of Northfield and my brother went to college there so seeing this is very heartening). __I know we've had so many calls for donations lately, and I am very cognizant of donor fatigue — but if you have even $5 to direct their way, it can provide meaningful, sustaining help to these families in need. __Just click_ _here_ _and select "Community Response Fund" when you donate.
There are so many obvious reasons that things feel hard right now. But we're also all grappling with personal and often relatively private reasons why things feel hard — and February (and March, let's be real) is historically one of the hardest times to deal with them. I've read so many newsletters, captions, and texts the past few weeks about feeling hopeless, or exhausted, or burnt out.
Consider this your outlet. Talking about what feels hard doesn't fix it, but it does make the contours of the difficulty, which we often hold so close, easier to understand. Sometimes just writing out what's piercing your heart is helpful. This is a place to acknowledge your sorrow, to describe your grief, and to confess the sadness that you've been trying, with various effectiveness, to avoid. It's a place to talk about new and chronic frustrations that make it feel impossible to keep doing the work you're doing. And it's a place for people to feel like others can see you and your struggles, however legible or illegible they may be to your immediate world.
I wouldn't entrust a comment thread with this sort of heaviness if I didn't have ample evidence that we could handle it. So as always: this is a private, subscriber-only space. Allow others to feel their feelings and be gentle in the way you respond to strangers on the internet just trying to map their struggles. Don't be butts about other people's hard shit, and let's keep this one of the good places on the internet.
