One of the reasons we started OpenRouter was to help people explore the new LLM-powered world, including the apps and agents that emerge over time.
It used to be the case that people would say "there are no breakout AI consumer apps. Except maybe Character AI."
In 2023, only creative writing and roleplay apps were popular - coding wasn't good enough. Then, starting with @Cline in late 2024, coding topped the leaderboard.
The verticals that dominate LLM apps have transitioned from roleplay -> coding in IDEs -> coding with CLIs -> personal agents, but now have diversified into many successful verticals running in parallel, with multiple "breakout apps/agents" succeeding at once.
Our App Rankings have become a standard way to compare the actual usage of different agents, but now the market has matured enough that segmentation is exciting.

- Apps can now rank within categories, or make trending
- Request-count rankings, in addition to tokens
- Apps can easily opt in and categorize their own generations.
