Brief

Anthropic is separating Claude subscriptions from third-party tools beginning April 4 at noon PT, starting with OpenClaw and eventually expanding to all external harnesses. The company says demand and third-party usage patterns made subscription-based access unsustainable, while keeping coverage intact for first-party Claude products and API access. The transition includes one-time subscriber credits, discounted bundles, and refund options.

ANTHROPIC JUST MADE A BIG CHANGE TO CLAUDE SUBSCRIPTIONS

starting tomorrow (april 4) at 12pm PT, your claude subscription will no longer cover usage on third-party tools like openclaw

here's what's changing:

> third-party harnesses can no longer use your subscription limits
> you'll need to enable extra usage (pay-as-you-go) to keep using them
> this starts with openclaw but will roll out to all third-party harnesses

here's what's NOT changing:

> your subscription still covers all claude products
> claude code, claude cowork, claude.ai all work the same
> api access is unaffected

anthropic says they've been struggling to meet demand and subscriptions weren't built for the usage patterns third-party tools create

to soften the blow:

> every subscriber gets a one-time credit equal to your monthly plan cost
> discounted usage bundles are now available
> if you want a full refund, there's a link in the email going out tomorrow

boris cherny from anthropic said they want to be intentional about managing growth so they can keep serving customers long-term

this is basically anthropic saying "we built claude for our own products first" which makes sense from a capacity standpoint but is going to hit a lot of developers who built workflows around third-party tools

if you're using openclaw or similar tools with your claude login, check your email and set up extra usage before tomorrow afternoon
