Hey readers, I’m doing an all-day “watch Tim do book drawings” livestream tomorrow, starting at 11:30am ET, here. But first, let me orient you to what’s been going on over here. I published _What’s Our Problem?___ on February 22, 2023 and my first child was born the next morning. Hectic times. A couple months later, I took a deep breath and embarked on the most ambitious project of my life: a book about everything. The book begins at the Big Bang, ends at the end of the universe, and tries to basically cover everything that has happened or will happen in between. It’s been a beast of an undertaking, but also really fun. The format, by definition, can include anything I want—so the book is essentially a collection of the topics and concepts I find most fascinating, across every field. Here are the main stages of the process, from first brainstorm to final manuscript:
The first draft was the hardest part, because it includes all the writing and planning along with an insane amount of research. It took about two years. As I worked on that, a team of professional researchers pored through each chapter and pointed out all the ways I am an inadequate person, amassing over 10,000 (!) total fact checks.
The second draft, which took about six months, was a combination of cutting 20% of the words, improving the structure and writing, and processing the mountain of fact-checker comments.
I’m currently in the middle of stage three: drawings (there are around 300 total). When those are done, I will do one more big round of revisions and cuts, based on feedback from experts and a couple hundred Patreon subscribers who have generously volunteered. At that point, I’m mostly done. It then heads off to the publisher for a year of copyediting, proofreading, page design, etc., and I can start doing blog posts again.
Anyway back to the point of this email. When I was doing drawings for _What’s Our Problem?_ , I did a few all-day livestreams. While sharing my screen, I chatted with readers while alternating between drawing and taking procrastination breaks to do things like exploring random parts of the world in Google Street View. It was both fun and productive (nothing will make you put in the work hours like having hundreds of people staring at your screen).
So we’re doing it again. Tomorrow’s drawing topics will range from space to ancient history to linguistics to biotech, and we’ll discuss each topic as we go. The stream starts tomorrow at 11:30am ET and will go until I am sufficiently exhausted. It’ll be on our YouTube channel , here:
