Brief

Calvin and Hobbes is sparking independent reading and language work in young children: @HannahWardEdu reports her 7-year-old self-assigns copywork into a commonplace book to save quotes and her 10-year-old begs for extra bedtime pages; Gena Gorlin adds that her 6-year-old reads the strip after lights-out and collects vocabulary words to quiz parents (tweeted May 9, 2026).

Source evidence

Calvin and Hobbes is fantastic. My 7 year old has been doing bonus self assigned Calvin and Hobbes copywork in her commonplace book throughout the day to save funny quotes and my 10 year old is always begging for a few more minutes before bedtime to read more pages.

6yo has been reading Calvin & Hobbes every night after she’s technically supposed to be asleep, so she collects vocab words to ask us the next day.
