Brief

dwallacewells highlights that a pronounced leftward shift in many major US cities — he adds Chicago and Boston to the list — has occurred even though conventional wisdom predicted urban disorder would produce a rightward reaction. He cites a June 17, 2026 Derek Thompson thread noting NYC (Mamdani), Seattle (Wilson), LA (Raman, final TBD) and DC (Janeese Lewis George leading) as examples.

Source evidence

What’s most remarkable about the leftward swing of so many big and prominent US cities—I’d add Chicago and Boston to the list—is that it happened right when conventional wisdom held that “urban disorder” was going to produce a big shift rightward. Could not have been more wrong.

With Janeese Lewis George significantly leading, but not yet called, in the Washington DC mayoral primary, that's four of the largest American cities either governed by or actively contesting a Democratic Socialist and/or DSA endorsed mayor in the last year:

  • NYC (Mamdani)
  • Seattle (Wilson)
  • LA (Raman; final election TBD)
  • D.C. (JLG)
