Elon Musk does not talk about Mars like a tech project. He talks about it like a moral obligation.

Consciousness, he says, is a tiny candle. It has been burning for 4.5 billion years. On one planet. Surrounded by vast, cold darkness.

Every species that has ever lived on Earth is gone or will be gone. The sun will eventually expand and swallow the planet. That is not a theory. It is a timeline.

The question is not whether life on Earth ends. It is whether anything survives.

Mars is not a vacation destination. It is a backup drive for the only consciousness we know exists in the universe.

He said this at the TED Gigafactory interview and the room went silent. Not because the science was new. Because he made everyone feel how fragile the whole thing is.

We spend our days arguing about politics and stock prices. Meanwhile the candle is burning down.
