Bumper plates vs iron plates: which one's best for a home gym?

- Bumpers cost more on average, but cheap iron can sometimes be cheaper than cheap bumpers
- Bumpers are designed to be dropped repeatedly, higher durometer = less bounce
- Cast iron lasts forever, but can't be dropped without damaging your floor or bar
- Bumpers are thicker, crumb rubber being the thickest, competition being slimmest, meaning less weight fits on the bar
- Even cheap iron plates are thin, you can load a ton of weight on the bar or a machine
- Cheap bumpers can be way off on weight accuracy, higher end bumpers should be within 10 grams
- Cheap iron can also be way off, mid-tier iron gets close, calibrated is the only option if you want perfection
- Bumpers are quieter on the drop, better for HOAs and nosy neighbors
Iron is louder, but honestly, that's kind of the point
- Competition bumpers look cool and make the bar look loaded
- Nothing beats the classic look of black iron

My recommendation:
Bumpers → Olympic lifting, protecting your floor, dropping weights
Iron → Big three, general training, loading machines, classic look and feel
