never thought i’d say this but it looks like google’s falling behind in the ai race.
in the last 24 hrs they’ve lost 2 key staff: Noam Shazeer (vp of eng) and John Jumper (alphafold) to openai and anthropic
the timing is challenging given google gemini hasn’t caught up to the frontier in ~5 months (especially in coding)
the silver lining is google has the capital to deploy and catch up via compute scaling but the doors closing fast in terms of model design
every day anthropic and openai get closer to self-improving models

A bit of news: After nearly 9 years, I have decided to leave Google DeepMind and join Anthropic (after taking some time to recharge). I am incredibly grateful for my time at GDM. @demishassabis took a real chance letting me lead the AlphaFold team just six months after finishing my PhD, and the entire GDM team taught me so much about how to do great science. GDM is a special place, and I’ll still be excited to hear about what amazing things they discover next.
